The Door County YMCA Strivers’ Gymnastics Team competed in the Tundra Invitational on Jan. 21 and 22 in Green Bay. The team comprises Sevastopol gymnasts Anna Gallardo-Ibarra, Shaylyn and Shylee Asher, Evelynn and Ellie Kelsey, and Lauren Gaida.

The Excel Silver Team, consisting of both the Kelsey girls and Gaida, placed 3rd out of 6 teams, unfortunately missing one of their members. Gaida took home a gold medal in vault and a silver medal in all-around and bars in the 12 and older group. Evelynn Kelsey placed 2nd on vault and 4th on bars in the 10 to 11-year-old group, while younger sister Ellie placed first on vault, floor, beam, and all-around in the nine and under age group.

The Excel Platinum team, consisting of Shylee Asher and Gallardo-Ibarra, took home a first-place finish. Gallardo-Ibarra won the beam event in the 14 and over age group.

“The highlight of this weekend was getting a 9.3 on beam, winning me 1st place,” Gallardo-Ibarra said. “I put five to six hours a week into this sport, so it is really nice when it pays off.”

The Strivers will travel to Marinette to compete in the state meet in March. Those who make it further will compete in the YMCA Gymnastic Nationals in June in Cincinnati, Ohio.
