On Saturday, February 15, Sevastopol School hosted Solo and Ensemble, where some of the best young musicians in Door County performed a solo or ensemble in front of judges. After their performances, students received constructive criticism so they could grow.
Music teachers Tanya Hasenjaeger and Betsy Miller took on the task of organizing the festival this year.
“We were excited to have the community in our building,” Hansenjager said
Musicians who received a star first rating at the district level advanced to the WSMA State Solo and Ensemble Music Festival held at other universities around Wisconsin.
For the Pioneers, senior Caleb Johnson will be advancing to state for his snare and piano solos.
“To get to state, the most important thing for me was to practice,” Johnson said. “I got the music back in December and practiced it pretty much whenever I had time until my performance. You also have to perform well while knowing that the judge and other spectators are watching, but that usually happens with practice.”
Regardless of how the student musicians finished, it was a good learning opportunity for all involved.
