Most importantly, the story of how Elphaba becomes known as wicked is what impressed me most.
Are people born wicked? What a compelling question.
Elphaba is a good person on the inside. She might look a little different and have different opinions than everyone in OZ but maybe that’s why OZ needs a new perspective on things. If it wasn’t for the Wizard lying to everyone about being a wizard and Madame Morrible siding with his decisions about not letting animals speck, then lying about Elphaba being wicked, truly shows that they are the wicked ones. Elphaba wants what’s best for OZ but they want what’s best for them.
With this in place for the animals it silences them. This is a lesson to learn not only through the movie but through real life. Just because you’re not like others doesn’t mean your opinions don’t matter. We can’t force people to be who we want them to be; we have to let them be themselves and show their true colors. Just like how they treated the animals in the movie, we as humans threaten others and beat them down when we don’t agree.
Wicked teaches us that you shouldn’t treat people and things differently because it can greatly affect them and you. Instead we should celebrate and recognize everyone’s emotions and opinions. In the movie they outcast Elphaba and the animals and make them into the wicked ones. We have a lot to learn from the people of Oz’s mistakes.
