Sevastopol students will compete at Solo Ensemble on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Gibraltar High School.
Solo and Ensemble is an opportunity for students to perform in front of judges and receive constructive feedback. Students can earn first, second, or third based on the quality of their performance, all while not competing against other participants.
Senior Merrick Mann has participated in Solo Ensemble for many years as a vocalist and has found it a good way to get feedback.
“I participate in Solo and Ensemble because it allows me to get valid criticism for my abilities,” Mann said. “I started doing it because I really wanted to sing after listening to a senior girl sing before one of my piano lessons in fourth grade. Since then, I’ve been learning music and competing somewhat. Solo ensemble is a great way to practice your talents and get involved with different people.”
Senior Beatrix Dramm has also been competing in Solo Ensemble for many years. She enjoys the feedback portion and likes to learn from other performers.
“Solo & Ensemble is a lot of fun,” Dramm said. “It’s a stimulating environment that brings performers together to share their talents and learn from one another. I appreciate hearing from the judges and getting their feedback on becoming a better musician. Still, I believe my favorite aspect of S&E is the collaboration: working with accompanists/music teachers as well as seeing other students share what they’ve been working on is especially rewarding.”
Along with Mann and Dramm, the following high school students will be competing: Kylie Sikorsky, Caleb Johnson, Izzy Andreae, Rachel Rock, and Danica Werkheiser.
