Girl’s Basketball Takes Conference and Regional Titles in historic season
On Monday, February 13, the girl’s basketball team locked in the conference championship title against N.E.W Lutheran, scoring 59-23. The championship title was the first in 47 years for the program.
“Everyone showed up and we got to business right away,” junior Katie Spude said. “When the game was over, fans surprised the team with balloons weighted with candy, kazoos, cookies, and party hats to celebrate the big win.”
The girls, who have been building up to this moment for several years now, finally achieved this long-standing team goal. They then began to prepare for regionals with an intense focus on defensive skills, and the practice paid off in the next round of post-season.
On Thursday, February 23, the girls conquered Suring 61-34, moving on to the regional final against Lena on Saturday, February 25. The team took on Lena and swept them 56-19, winning the regional championship.
“We’ve always had a great defense, and it was a really important factor that led to the win, ” junior Sam Herrell said.
The girls move on to the sectional semi-finals on Thursday, March 2 at Crivitz High School against Wabeno/Laona at 7 pm.
